Abandoning New Born Babies Is Like Attempted Murder

Feb 4, 2016 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party is seriously concerned about the increasing number of new born babies that are being abandoned in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Paramedics and social workers are constantly being called upon to rescue new born babies that are left to die in dust bins, in the open veld or other isolated places and this is a matter for serious concern. We are of the view that such acts are akin to attempted murder and those responsible should be charged accordingly and the harshest criminal sanction should be meted out. We do understand that it must be very emotional and painful for mothers to abandon new born babies, therefore it is important that they must be made aware of the options that are available to them. Nurses and social workers should be in a position to offer counselling and advice to pregnant mothers in order to prevent babies being left to die”, said IFP KZN Spokesperson on Social Development, Hon Ncamisile Nkwanyana MPL.

“Abandoning of new born babies is a reflection on the moral fibre of society and reflects poorly on our social conscious. There could be many reasons for such a drastic and unforgiving act such as an unplanned pregnancy, unemployment, absent fathers and lack of family support. Whatever the circumstance, there can be no compelling reason for a defenceless baby to be left to die in a dustbin. All role players including government, civic organisations and religious institutions have a role to play in educating and empowering their respective communities in this regard. Both men and women need to know what their responsibilities and options are and who they can turn to for help and guidance. Let us all work towards ensuring that there will never be another child left to die without having the opportunity to embark on life’s journey”, concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.
