Auditor General Reports for 2015-16 an Indictment on Local Government

Jun 22, 2017 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party is discouraged at the slow progress being made at local government level in respect of good governance, accountability, proper financial and performance management.

IFP spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Inkosi RN Cebekhulu, MP, said, “We are extremely concerned about the increase in areas such as irregular expenditure which now sits at close to 17bn rand for the period under review. This money is desperately required for delivery of basic services and general poverty alleviation of the poor and most vulnerable citizens of this country. Municipal workers could also then benefit from this by being paid better salaries”

“Local government appears to have lost the good momentum gained during the 2010-2015 period with only marginal improvements being made”

“Much must still be done. Local government should roll up its sleeves, embrace good governance practices, and get to work for the people of South Africa,” concluded Cebekhulu, MP.
