Note to Editors: This statement follows the briefing by SASSA Management to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) on irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure, in Parliament this morning.
Billions of Rands lost at the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) must be recovered.
The money lost on frivolous items and those who have unduly benefitted must pay back the money or face the full might of the law.
The IFP is aware of the current investigation taking place within the entity to institute disciplinary and recovery measures, however, we call on Social Development Minister, Susan Shabangu MP, to fast track procedures and report to Parliament and South Africa on any progress or the lack thereof made at the entity.
We cannot allow billions of Rands which are intended to serve our most vulnerable communities to simply fill the pockets of a few corrupt and immoral individuals within SASSA.
It is a disgrace that there has been a lack of political will to ensure that corruption which is rife within SASSA has not been addressed.
Monies spent must be recovered from all officials implicated and we await strong action to be taken against officials which have acted in contravention of the law.
Social Development Minister Susan Shabangu MP, needs to ensure that entities which report to her make better financial and management decisions and act in accordance with the law.
