The Inkatha Freedom Party calls on the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism in KwaZulu-Natal, Sihle Zikalala and the South African Human Rights Commission to urgently investigate the alleged claims of racism after a prospective client of Sodwana Bay Guest House in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal received an email from a representative of the lodge refusing the booking on racist grounds stating that it does not accommodate black or government officials any longer.
“It is indeed sad that citizens of our country are still exposed to dehumanising experiences of racism and other forms of discrimination – in spite of the progress that we as a nation have made. This is not who we are as a nation, and it certainly does not reflect who we are in the tourism industry. This creates a negative image with our tourism destinations. To this end, there needs to be an investigation into this matter, so as to establish all of the facts, and to take the necessary action to remedy the situation,” said IFP National Chairperson, Mr Blessed Gwala.
“These incidents highlight a broader need for the systemic challenges of racial divisions that exist in some of the country’s institutions, and in society in general to be eradicated. One can only imagine the deep humiliation and hurt that any person would feel under such circumstances. The fight against racism is not negotiable. We must all stamp out racism whenever and wherever it occurs. We must not tolerate racist behaviour from anyone,” continued Mr Gwala
“The vast majority of South Africans and operators of our tourism establishments uphold the constitutional right of every person to have dignity and freedom, and for that dignity and freedom to be respected and protected at all times, but some forms of racism are still being practised by a small minority of people. These actions do not belong in a democratic society which is driven by the values of equality,” concluded Mr Gwala.
The IFP believes that strong action must be taken to root out all remnants of racism. It further believes that the majority of South Africans who respect each other’s rights should never allow the actions of the small minority to undermine the strides that the nation has made towards equality.
