“The latest rant by SABC’s Hlaudi Motsoeneng on changing the name of established radio station, Lotus FM, will achieve nothing but further alienate people from patronage of the SABC,” said IFP Chief Whip in Parliament, Mr Narend Singh, MP.
Singh continued,” Lotus FM has great cultural significance to its predominantly large Indian listener base and the Lotus flower is a flower which grows on the continent. What could Hlaudi possibly have against a name associated with an African flower?”
“The 90/10 music quota is also failing at this stage as there is simply not enough local content to satisfy the listenership,”
“Motsoeneng seems to be hell-bent on destroying SABC’s listenership. I also am advised that he is acting beyond the scope and powers of his office. I have accordingly requested a meeting with senior SABC officials, through the IFP member in parliament on communications, Ms Liezl van der Merwe, and will be following this matter up at the highest levels,” concluded Singh, MP
