The IFP applauds yet another drug bust by Hawks and the Umhlali K9 police unit in the upmarket Simbithi Eco-Estate in Durban North. Bags filled with chemicals and powders used to manufacture mandrax and heroin were discovered in a bedroom, where a total of R154.9 million worth of drugs were seized.
This is the second multi-million-rand drug bust in KwaZulu-Natal in less than a week.
Last Wednesday, members of the Richard’s Bay Hawks found 342 kgs of heroin, worth R87 million, hidden in a secret compartment of a truck from Mozambique, headed towards Durban.
However, we suspect possible political influence behind the narcotics smuggling in the province. The IFP recommends that the police and justice system leave no stone unturned in their investigation, and work get to the bottom of these highly organized crimes. Apart from the drug lords, who are always said to be in the forefront of drug trafficking, the KwaZulu-Natal people want to know the real masterminds behind this thriving business in our townships and villages. The province is infested with lost souls who stand at every traffic light, and on every street corner, who are victims of drug abuse.
The IFP is of the opinion that most of the drug smuggling operations in the province are successful, and that the latest busts are merely the tip of the iceberg.
The IFP calls for the Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Khombinkosi Jula, and his team to put more effort in dealing with gender-based violence, crime, human trafficking, the latest taxi violence incidents and drug-related killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
