The IFP calls for harsh sentences to be meted out to anyone found to be involved in public violence.
This comes after one person was arrested, with police pursuing another group that went on the rampage in the Durban city centre on Monday, looting and setting shops alight.
The IFP condemns these acts in the strongest terms. Lawlessness and criminal activity must not be tolerated. They must be eradicated and severely punished, without fear or favour. Harsh punishment must be meted out to anyone found guilty of instigating public violence. We urge courts to show no mercy to such people. Public violence is inexcusable and deserving of harsh sentences.
Though the IFP recognises and respects individuals’ rights and freedoms to demonstrate, and to raise their concerns – peacefully – regarding legitimate grievances, the level of violence, and the torching of shops has to be condemned. People must follow proper channels if they want to raise their concerns, not to resort to violence and crime.
Members of our communities have to know that when they break the law, the SAPS will have to respond. They have a constitutional mandate to prevent, combat and investigate crime, to maintain public order, and to protect people and their property.
The IFP urges the police to work around the clock to apprehend the suspects involved in the looting and burning of shops in Durban.
