The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu-Natal calls on the National Prosecuting Authority to release the report on how the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health spent R120 million on two radiotherapy machines for Durban’s Addington Hospital and awarded a dodgy contract to maintain them.
“We concur with National Minister of Health, Dr Motsoaledi who recently raised his concerns about the delay in arresting all those implicated in this matter. We demand that the National Prosecuting Authority must release the report because the Hawks have confirmed that the report is ready and has been forwarded to the NPA to make a decision,” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Ncamisile Nkwanyana MPL.
“At the centre of the controversy are questions over the purchase of the oncology machines in 2009 and the awarding of a repair and maintenance contract for a further R5.4 million, at R435 000 a month for five years, without following tender processes. If the report has found any irregularities, heads must roll in this matter. Both the officials and those service providers involved must be blacklisted. We demand that those service providers must pay back the money as they benefitted from tenders irregular. We must fight corruption like we fought apartheid,” continued Mrs Nkwanyana.
“Furthermore, our concern is extended to the failure by the KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu to act against the incompetent KZN MEC of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo. We re-iterate that MEC Dhlomo must be fired for his failure to solve the heath crisis in the province. But being arrogant and dismissive is typical of the incompetence of the ANC-led government. What is missing is a political will to fire this incompetent MEC. Without such a single-minded political will, the healthcare system in KZN will not improve. The ANC government needs to overcome its inertia or the tendency towards a knee-jack approach to take action against incompetent comrades,” concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.
The IFP is concerned about ANC cadre deployment which places loyalty ahead of merit and even competence and this is seriously affecting public service. We must fire and demote incompetent workers in a bid to stimulate effective service delivery and productivity of public servants.
