IFP Calls on Minister Cele to Provide Clarity

Feb 8, 2023 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has noted comments by the SAPS, refuting claims that the SAPS briefed the EFF about a possible assassination attempt on their Secretary-General, purportedly planed by “IFP leadership”.

According to the SABC, SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, “The South African Police Services is not aware of any briefing to the EFF but in the main, we do not discuss the safety, security and threat assessments of individuals in the public domain”.

The IFP welcomes the SAPS’s clarification that it has no knowledge of an alleged assassination plot against the EFF’s SG.

However, EFF spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys, has since claimed that Police Minister, Bheki Cele, called EFF leadership on the evening of 6 February, to brief them regarding the alleged threat.

Conversely, in discussions between Minister Cele and the IFP, the Minister claimed to have no knowledge of the briefing regarding the alleged threat against the EFF SG.

The IFP therefore calls on Minister Cele to speak up and provide an official response regarding the alleged briefing, so that the dangerous allegations against the IFP can be set aside, once and for all.
