The IFP calls on the Minster of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy to request the Green Scorpions to investigate the beheaded, finned and gutted shark species which were dumped on Strandfontein beach along the False Bay coast in Cape Town recently.

This matter is due to a multiplicity of problems that require holistic and meaningful solutions to ensure ecosystem health and security.

Sharks are an apex predator within the sensitive marine environment and if allowed to be eradicated in such numbers it will lead to total ecosystem collapse.

The False Bay coastline is a marine protected area and as such, deserves every legislative effort in terms of ecosystem protection.

This is not the first time the False Bay coast has been hard-hit by illegal or questionable fishing practices.

I will follow-up this matter through submitting parliamentary questions to Minister Creecy, as well as raise the matter in the Portfolio Committee of Environment.

Decisive action is required by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries if we are to ensure sustainable use of our marine stocks and environments.
