IFP Condemns Attack Of Elders

May 20, 2016 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party has voiced its grave concern over the escalating number of reports of senior citizen being attacked. This comes after a 77-year-old woman was attacked with a garden hoe at her home in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal.

“This callous attack on such an elderly woman is utterly barbaric and against all that we stand for. We cannot remain silent when such incidents occur. The person responsible for the attack on a person who could be considered his mother or grandmother, must be brought to book and face the full might of the law. A strong message must go out that as communities we will not tolerate such criminal acts. There must be respect for our elderly citizens and they should be taken care of and not abused in any way. What kind of society are we building if we allow such incidents to keep happening? Community members must co-operate with the police and provide information so that we can stop such incidents from occurring again. We also plead that government must initiate bolder campaign against elderly abuse,”said the KZN IFP Women’s Brigade Chairperson, Cllr Thokozile Gumede.

“The IFP calls for justice to be served and these attackers should be jailed. We also call for unity in protecting woman and children, and for harsh punishment for those found guilty of such crimes,” concluded Cllr Gumede.
