The Inkatha Freedom Party has condemned the recent attack on the home of an IFP candidate in Nongoma that left one person dead.
“The home of our Ward 14 candidate in Nongoma, Mr Simon Mbatha was attacked last Saturday night. Mr Mbatha was not at home at the time of the attack but unfortunately his cousin, Mr Nkosinathi Masondo (26) was killed. We suspect that the cowardly attackers were targeting Mr Mbatha as he is the only male in the house and a strong candidate in that ward. Such criminal acts only serve to undermine our democracy and rob our country of young and enthusiastic leadership. We cannot remain silent while such brutal acts are visited upon our people. The police in the area must ensure that our candidate and his family are protected and kept safe from any further attacks”, said IFP National Chairman, Mr Blessed Gwala.
“We are deeply saddened that a young man has lost his life just by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The IFP extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr Masondo. We encourage the people of Nongoma not to be deterred by such criminal acts and to protect our democracy from those who seek to destroy it. As law abiding citizens we must never bow down to criminals or give in to intimidation.
We welcome the Task Team that has been set up by the Acting Police Commissioner in KZN, General Langa to investigate this incident and the killing of Mr Alson Mzwakhe Nkosi and others at Abaqulusi. We are hopeful that the Task Team will identify the killers and put an end to any further such attacks”, concluded Mr Gwala.
