IFP Condemns MEC Sithole-Moloi’s Abuse of Power and Interference in IFP-led Municipalities

Jun 28, 2023 | Press Releases, Provincial (KZN/Gauteng)

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in KZN again strongly condemns the abuse of power by KZN COGTA MEC, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, who has been brazenly using her role within the provincial government to frustrate and destroy IFP-led municipalities for the benefit of her party, the ANC.

It is with great concern that we witness the continuous destructive tactics employed by MEC Sithole-Moloi in local municipalities under IFP governance.

Just yesterday, she overstepped her boundaries by writing to the Speaker of Inkosi Mtubatuba Local Municipality, coercing the Speaker to convene a Council Meeting under the pretence of interpreting a recent court judgment on councillors. Has the MEC forgotten that the municipality has its own legal department, which is responsible for such matters?

MEC Sithole-Moloi’s interference is particularly notable following the ANC’s explicit declaration to target Mtubatuba Municipality and to wrestle control from the IFP-led administration. It is evident that Sithole-Moloi is behaving as if her Department is an extension of the ANC, rather than an impartial government institution.

Furthermore, she has been deploying her comrades as ineffective administrators in IFP-led municipalities, resulting in significant delays and frustrations in service delivery. The current incompetent administrator in charge at the IFP-led uThukela District, for instance, has displayed a lack of urgency in procuring chlorine to purify water for public consumption. Such delays directly impact the lives and wellbeing of our communities, and it is unacceptable for the MEC to prioritise her political agenda over the people’s needs.

The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal warns MEC Sithole-Moloi not to undermine the will of the people. We remind her that the power lies with the people, and their interests and wellbeing should always be the main priority. Service delivery should not be hindered by political games and the MEC’s partisan agenda.

We call on MEC Sithole-Moloi to immediately cease her abuse of authority and interference in IFP-led municipalities.

The people of KwaZulu-Natal deserve fair and impartial governance, free from political manipulation. The IFP remains committed to serving our communities and upholding the will of the people.
