The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has submitted its candidate lists to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), in keeping with the IEC’s current timetable for the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE).
Notwithstanding our call for the LGE to be postponed, the IFP is making the necessary preparations to adhere existing IEC deadlines. This includes the submission of a party list before 21h00 on 23 August 2021. Our candidates are ready to stand up, speak up, and serve the people of their constituencies.
As the IFP, we are committed to the democratic project, and to ensuring that the people of South Africa will be served by leaders with a proven track record in local government. The IFP is further committed to providing effective, functional governance, as well as efficient service delivery.
We now await the electioneering guidelines, which are yet to be finalised, to complete our election preparations.
As the IFP, we respect the Rule of Law and will abide by whatever the Constitutional Court. We are, however, confident that our case – and well-substantiated arguments for a postponement of the 2021 LGE – will resonate. As we have maintained on numerous occasions, the health and wellbeing of all South Africans must always be of paramount concern.
We once again call on all South Africans to continue to adhere to all existing Covid-19 protocols so as to remain safe, as the country continues its fight against this devastating pandemic.
