IFP Deeply Saddened by Loss of Life in Boksburg Gas Leak

Jul 6, 2023 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was deeply saddened to hear of the devastating loss of life in Boksburg, following a suspected gas leak.

According to reports, 17 people, including several children, lost their lives, with many more admitted to hospital for treatment.

As the IFP, we wish to convey our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased, as well as the wider Boksburg community, which has been struck by tragedy yet again, following a horrific tanker explosion a little over six months ago.

The cause of the gas leak has been linked to possible illegal mining activities, which were allegedly taking place at the Angelo informal settlement.

As the IFP, we do not condone illegal mining. However, the fact that people were willingly undertaking this very dangerous activity speaks to the sheer desperation of many South Africans who find themselves unemployed, and unable to provide for themselves and their families.

We believe that the blame for this tragedy can be laid squarely at the feet of the ruling party, who have consistently failed to get their house in order and create an environment that is conducive to job creation and decent work.
