The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) extends heartfelt thanks to the citizens of South Africa for their enthusiastic participation in the recent voter registration weekend.
Quick statistics from the registration weekend reveal a noteworthy engagement of 2.9 million voters, with 2.7 million people physically visiting registration stations, and 196 000 opting for online registration. Particularly encouraging is the surge in new registrations, totalling 568 374, with an impressive 78% attributed to the youth demographic (16-29 age group).
The Voters’ Roll has seen a commendable increase, from 26.3 million to 26.82 million, with the provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape leading in registration numbers.
In comparison to 2019, where a total of 700 000 new registrations were recorded, with 574 000 being youth registrations, the current turnout demonstrates a significant commitment to civic participation.
While acknowledging this achievement, it is crucial to recognise that there is more ground to cover, especially among eligible youth who have yet to register. The IFP encourages continuous efforts to motivate young people to register between now and the upcoming voter registration weekend in February 2024.
