The news of the passing on of a formidable giant in fighting for our freedom and in speaking out against inequality, social injustice and a fervent defender of our democracy, Prof. Ben Turok, has brought deep sadness to the hearts of many who had the fortune in crossing paths with him.

Prof. Turok, holds many titles and accolades, as a former anti-apartheid activist, economics professor and as a former Member of Parliament; however, his humility and wisdom is by far what he will be most fondly remembered for.

The political legacy of Prof. Turok will forever be etched in our memories as he together with many others fought for the rights we enjoy today; his ability to foster good relationships across the political spectrum and in particular the relationship he had established with the late IFP MP Mario Ambrosini, in strongly speaking out and standing against his own party’s proposals in the Protection of State Information Bill saga 2013, is one of many examples which showed his love of democratic choice and principles in protecting the rights and freedoms of all South Africans above all else.

Prof. Turok’s inspirational and true example of integrity and candidness in character is what we hold onto at this time in which our country mourns his loss. He was never one who shied away from speaking truth to power.

On behalf the IFP President Emeritus and Parliamentary Leader, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP and our President, Velenkosini Hlabisa MPL, the IFP extends our sincere, most heartfelt condolences to his immediate and extended family, to his friends, to all comrades in the ANC, and to each and every person he revered, at this time of deep grief and sadness.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
