IFP: Fix faulty lifts at Addington Hospital and stop victimising workers

Dec 3, 2020 | Press Releases

The IFP says Management at Addington Hospital must stop victimising workers who expose shoddy work at the Hospital.

This comes after the Public Servants Association (PSA) revealed that one of its shop stewards – who raised concerns about safety matters at Addington Hospital – had been suspended from work.

Those who should be suspended are the Management of Addington Hospital – not the workers. They have brought this healthcare facility into disrepute for a long time, and always seem to make the news – for the wrong reasons. It is time for capable, qualified and competent people to take the reins at this Hospital.

The IFP, therefore, calls on the KZN MEC of Health, Nomagugu Simelane Zulu, to fire the Management of Addington Hospital, because they are failing to run the Hospital efficiently and provide the level of care that their patients deserve. This kind of ineptitude cannot be tolerated.

The IFP would like to suggest that Management should pay urgent attention to fixing faulty and dangerous lifts, and to addressing the other challenges facing the Hospital – instead of victimising workers who have become whistle-blowers and exposed the shenanigans taking place at the Hospital. The main focus should be to address the elephant in the room, which is the faulty lifts.

The IFP is against the suspension of the shop steward at Addington Hospital and urges other workers to remain resolute and continue to expose wrongdoing at all Provincial healthcare facilities. In the struggle for transparency and accountability, whistle-blowers play an invaluable role.  Whistle-blowers require need iron-clad, enforceable protections, so as to encourage them to speak out.

Our community can no longer afford to suffer due to the incompetence of the Management at Addington Hospital. Public hospitals need competent leadership. Those causing havoc in our healthcare facilities must be weeded out, without fear or favour.
