The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was horrified to hear of the devastating tanker explosion that occurred in Boksburg earlier today.
According to reports, eight people lost their lives in the blast, with dozens more seriously injured. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to those who lost loved ones. Our prayers go out to everyone who has been affected by this terrible tragedy.
The IFP would also like to extend our appreciation to all those emergency services’ personnel who provided support and assistance, as well as to Gift of the Givers, who have again stepped up to provide much-needed medical supplies and staff to support the hospitals caring for those who are injured.
We further call on the Department of Transport to review the necessary requirements for those who drive trucks and other vehicles that are transporting hazardous materials: safety checks and procedures must be strengthened so that we can prevent such an incident from happening again.
We trust that the investigation into the explosion will not only provide answers to the cause of the explosion, but also ways to improve best-practice guidelines for both vehicles and drivers.
May those who lost their lives rest in eternal peace, and may God comfort their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
