The IFP has noted with grave concern the reports that a dirty plot is being staged against IFP councillors aimed to disrupt the process of electing a new Mayor in Mthonjaneni Local Municipality in KZN, tomorrow after the IFP secured control of this municipality after the Department of Co-operative Governance withdrew its challenge.
“We take these allegations seriously as they involve lives of our councillors. It is quite clear that IFP ward councillors are being targeted for assassination and this gives credence to the rumours that there is a well laid-out sinister plan to instigate disruption in the process of electing a Mayor on Friday. If IFP ward councillors are removed one by one, it will force by-elections in the area and give other political parties the opportunity to take control of the municipality. The grand plan is clear: Is to remove IFP from the political radar,” said IFP National Chairperson, Mr Blessed Gwala.
“This is similar to those who have claimed that the IFP was faltering under the laager of conservatism and a party that has lost relevance. Political intolerance has raised its ugly head again and we must curb it before it reignites the political intolerance that rocked the province and the country in the 1980s and early 1990s. The IFP will not be intimidated about these claims. It will ensure that the municipality is stabilised and that the administration will be well-managed in the interest of the people of Mthonjaneni. The IFP is ready to govern wherever the people want us,” concluded Mr Gwala.
The IFP will, appeal to law enforcement to investigate these allegations and bring the perpetrators of this hideous act to book no matter how senior or influential the politicians may be. The IFP warns against provocations in the run-up to the local government election, which are aimed at undermining support for any political party.
