The IFP in KZN is concerned that the community of Alfred Duma Municipality for the second time this year demonstrated their dissatisfaction about the goings on in Alfred Duma Local municipality. We are informed that today there are not taxis that transport workers and community members to the town of Ladysmith because the community is concerned about corruption and misuse of public funds in Alfred Duma Municipality.
The IFP in KZN calls upon the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), the Hon Sipho Hlomuka to immediately intervene in this situation before it gets out of hand. The allegations against the Mayor must be investigated if found to be true appropriate action must be taken.
The fact that taxis are not available to transport workers to their places of work puts into jeopardy jobs of workers in this difficult economic situation which is facing our country. Businesses are also affected when customers are not able to go to town to buy what they need which disrupts economic activities in this town.
Further to this, the IFP has noted with concern the reports that the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) wants to go ahead with elections of Traditional Councils despite concerns expressed by Amakhosi that these elections not be held until the remuneration problems faced by those who are currently serving in traditional councils are sorted out.
The IFP in KZN Legislature intends to submit a question to the Hon KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to enquire from him how many traditional council members have not been paid to date, what is the cause of the failure by the Department to pay them and what is the plan of the department to fix this problem. We call upon the Hon MEC to heed the call by Amakhosi on this matter, we call upon him to intervene to ensure that those who have not been paid are paid what is due to them and that the Hon MEC sits down with Amakhosi in KwaZulu-Natal and agree on a new date on which these elections will be held.
