IFP: KZN MEC for Health Must Account for Failures of Her Administration

Jul 21, 2022 | Press Releases

The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal Legislature believes that the continued logistics problems plaguing the Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal cannot be reversed. This Department appears to be in limbo, without hope of improvement. We are therefore calling for MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu to account for the failings of her incompetent administration, and to bring solutions to the table.

This call comes as yet another horrific oversight on the part of the Department has been made public. The IFP is shocked by the images currently making the rounds on social media platforms, showing corpses packed like sardines, some piled high, with others seemingly left to rot on the floors of the Phoenix Mortuary. It is alleged that some of these bodies have been stored in this Mortuary for over eight years.

The IFP has been vocal regarding its deep dissatisfaction with MEC Simelane-Zulu’s administration since the very first day that she assumed the province’s critical Health Department’s highest office. Tragically, this Department only seems to make the news for all the wrong reasons, such as corruption totalling millions of rands, and a laundry-list of serious concerns raised by the Auditor-General about how the Department is handling its finances.

We cannot allow the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal to be subjected to this kind of treatment; let alone the staff and workers who have to persevere, despite the hazardous environment.

The people of KwaZulu-Natal deserve quality healthcare, and to be treated with dignity. The IFP will continue to campaign for accountability from those who are unable to fulfil their duties to the public, without fear or favour.
