The Inkatha Freedom Party says the only way to resolve the current chaos in the problem-stricken Mooi-Mpofana Municipality is to have fresh elections so that the people can vote for a government that will work for everyone.
“We have noted that the KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube has addressed the Mooi Mpofana municipal council with an announcement of the Provincial Government’s intervention in this municipality in terms of section 139(1) b of the Constitution.
It is high time NOW for this council to be dissolved. There is a long history of instability in this municipality. It is a well-known fact that if it was an IFP led municipality the MEC and her political would have called for this municipality to be dissolved, but because it is an ANC led municipality the MEC is trying by all means to protect her comrades,” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Hon Princess Phumzile Buthelezi MPL.
“Since 2012 Mooi Mpofana municipality has been plagued with chronic instability that has necessitated two previous interventions, including a dissolution of the council in 2014. The municipality’s financial position is dire with insufficient funds to cover its long-term commitments, unpaid creditors, unspent conditional grants and a debt to Eskom which has previously raised the possibility of disconnection of services to the community. The municipality is also failing to maintain infrastructure and collect revenue. People in Mooi-Mpofana need service delivery not people who are fighting for the sake of protecting their positions,” continued Hon Princess Buthelezi.
“Mooi-Mpofana municipality is in dire need of competent leadership. It is becoming increasingly clear that the provincial government has no answer for the governance crisis in Mooi Mpofana. The only remaining answer is for the provincial government to admit their collective failure and dissolve the council and declare fresh elections,” concluded Hon Princess Phumzile Buthelezi.
