IFP Rejects Matric Rewrites

Dec 7, 2020 | Press Releases

The IFP, together with the IFP National Youth Brigade (IFPYB), rejects the latest statement delivered by Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, that the Department will go ahead with rewrites of the matric exam papers that were leaked.

We believe that this is a premature move by the Department, particularly in the absence of conclusive findings drawn from a thorough investigation into the alleged leak.

It is unfair on students, teachers and parents to be subjected to further strain this year, as the conditions for matriculants have already been tougher than most years.

It is simply a cop-out from a Department that does not want to take responsibility for weaknesses in their own system. Students must not pay the price for departmental flaws and incompetence.

There was no sufficient consultation with all stakeholders concerned, and political parties were never briefed in Parliament – until the IFP raised this matter and asked questions in the National Assembly.

Learners are ill-prepared for a rewrite of the various examinations.

The IFP calls on Minister Motshekga to ensure that the matter is properly investigated, and that any officials within the Department found responsible are held to account.

Decisions regarding rewrites must be based on verifiable facts and should only be made once the investigation has been completed.
