The Inkatha Freedom Party sends heartfelt condolences to the families of the fifteen people killed when a train and a taxi collided near Ballito on the KZN north coast.
“This is a terrible tragedy that has taken place in our province. We pray for the families and friends of those who lost their lives today to be strong during this dark hour. To lose loved ones is never easy to bear and it must be even more difficult for those who have lost bread winners and heads of families”, said IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.
“We call on the provincial Department of Transport to offer counselling services to the families of the deceased and also assist with burial costs. We demand that a full investigation is carried out to ascertain how the taxi left the bridge and landed on the railway line only to be struck by a train. We appeal to all road users to obey the rules of the road and those who transport passengers must ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times. There is a need for an urgent summit with the taxi industry to evaluate the competency of drivers. We cannot go on losing lives of innocent commuters who are going about their daily lives”, concluded Mr Gwala.
