IFP Statement of Condolence on the Passing of Presley Oageng Chweneyagae

May 27, 2025 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is deeply saddened by the passing of one of South Africa’s most beloved and gifted actors, Presley Oageng Chweneyagae.

A son of the soil, Presley was more than an actor — he was a storyteller, a vessel of our nation’s hopes, struggles, and triumphs. His unforgettable performance in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi moved hearts across the world and introduced global audiences to the soul of South African cinema. In every role he took on, whether on screen or stage, Presley brought authenticity, passion, and a quiet strength that resonated with millions.

As the charismatic “Cobra” in The River, he reminded us of the complexity and humanity in our everyday lives. Through his craft, Presley gave voice to those often unheard, and in doing so, helped shape the cultural identity of a post-apartheid South Africa.

The IFP mourns this tragic and untimely loss, and we pay tribute to a man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his artistry. We honour his contribution not only to the arts, but to the nation — inspiring young creatives to believe that their stories, too, matter.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the South African arts community. May you find comfort in knowing how deeply he was loved and how profoundly he will be missed.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his light never fade.
