The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) notes and welcomes the appointment of the SABC Board – despite countless delays over the past five months – with President Ramaphosa appointing a 12-person Board on Tuesday, 18 April 2023.
We further welcome the firm decision of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies to call upon the President to make the appointments, as the Portfolio Committee had fulfilled all responsibilities as regards shortlisting of candidates.
As the IFP, we welcome all new Board Members, and wish them well. We hope that under their guidance, the status of the SABC will change for the better. In addition, we trust that they will explore – and roll-out – mechanisms to minimise irregularities at the Public Broadcaster and build an SABC that is sustainable.
The role of the public broadcaster cannot be overstated, particularly as the country approaches an election year, and we count on all new SABC Board Members to fulfil their responsibilities without fear or favour, in the best interests of South Africa’s constitutional democracy.
