IFP Welcomes Arrest of Deputy National Police Commissioner

Oct 12, 2020 | Press Releases

The IFP welcomes the arrest today of yet another high-ranking police official involved in tender corruption, which relates to the supply of emergency warning equipment for the South African Police (SAPS) services in 2017.

The most recent arrest is that of Deputy National Police Commissioner, Bonang Mgwenya, who has been arrested and charged with corruption, theft, fraud and money laundering, for which former National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane, was also arrested.

It is a grave shame that some of our top cops have broken their oath of office to uphold the laws of our country, defend and protect our hard-won rights and freedoms and to offer their service to their fellow South Africans.

We commend the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for pursuing this matter and sending a clear message to all our servicemen and women in the police that stealing money from hard-working ordinary South Africans will result in jail time.

The IFP believes that these arrests are a step in the right direction, towards consequence management on long outstanding matters of prevalent corruption and irregularity at the SAPS.

We call for swift justice in this matter. The IFP has repeatedly and persistently raised matters of wrongdoing with SAPS and other law enforcement agencies and we are pleased that action is being taken.

Minister Bheki Cele and National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, have their work cut out for them in cleaning up the SAPS and removing rotten cops who continue to drag the reputation and trust in our police services into disrepute.
