The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) welcomes the judgement handed down against Kelly Smith and her co-accused in the tragic case involving the kidnapping and trafficking of her then six-year-old daughter Joshlin Smith. This ruling is a crucial step in ensuring that those responsible for such heinous crimes are held accountable.
While the party acknowledges the efforts of law enforcement and the justice system in securing this conviction, we remain gravely concerned that Joshlin’s whereabouts are still unknown. The IFP calls on the South African Police Service and all relevant authorities to intensify their search and investigation until Joshlin is found and her family receives the answers they deserve.
A child belongs to the community.
This case has cast a harsh spotlight on the ongoing crisis of human trafficking in our country. The IFP reaffirms its stance that the protection of children must be a national priority. We urge government to strengthen preventative strategies, enforce harsher penalties, and improve coordination between social services, community safety structures, and law enforcement agencies.
Our thoughts remain with Joshlin’s family and all affected by this tragedy. The IFP stands in unwavering solidarity with all communities fighting for the safety and dignity of their children.
