IFP Welcomes Pardon of Political Prisoners

Sep 17, 2015 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party has welcomed Minister Micheal Masutha’s announcement to release thirty three political prisoners, who had committed politically motivated crimes during the struggle for liberation.

IFP spokesperson on Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Albert Mncwango, MP said, “We welcome the release of the 33 offenders; I think this is a positive step by the parole board to have recommended their release because it contributes immensely to the peace and reconciliation process. It is also an attempt to close the chapter of an ugly episode in our struggle for freedom and democracy in this country”.

“However, the IFP is disappointed that the original 2000 applications were reduced to 600, 149 and now, only 33. We also believe that political parties should have been consulted prior to this announcement in order to ensure no foul play in the process,”

“Once the IFP members are released they will receive full reintegration back into society to ensure that they are not involved again in the activities that they had landed them in prison in the first place”, assured Mr Mncwango.

“We hope that the minister will continue with this journey until all political prisoners are released” concluded Mr Mncwango.
