The IFP welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement this evening – in consultation with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and Cabinet – that we implement stricter measures in coronavirus hotspots, and on gatherings.
Just a week ago, the President addressed the nation, warning us all of the risks of a second wave, yet it seems that his call to South Africans fell on deaf ears. Far too many establishments and individuals are flouting the regulations – at the cost of precious lives – and we cannot allow this to continue unabated.
We welcome the additional nationwide restrictions. These take place, with immediate effect, at midnight tonight, including stricter enforcement of Lockdown Alert Level 1 regulations, and that gatherings are limited to 100 persons indoors, and 250 persons outdoors.
We are pleased with the decision to implement a longer curfew, from 23h00 – 04h00.
Further to this, we welcome the decision by the NCCC on the inclusion of the hotspots of the Garden Route and the Sarah Baartman District. The decision to close beaches and public parks in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route are also welcomed.
Educating our people and ensuring that adherence to the lockdown regulations is strictly monitored, is of the utmost importance. We can ill-afford overcrowding at hospitals.
Therefore, the IFP appeals to all South Africans to be mindful of the great work that has thus far been done by the medical fraternity. The strain we are now placing on our healthcare system is cause for great concern.
Let us unite in scaling down our plans, parties, festivities and gatherings over this festive period, and hold off until a vaccine is widely available to all South Africans.
The onus rests upon each and every South African to ensure that we maintain social and physical distancing, and observe and obey all Lockdown regulations.
We urge all South Africans to conduct themselves in a responsible manner over the festive season in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
