IFP will not rest till justice is done for Ilovu Transit Camp residents

Feb 13, 2020 | Press Releases

The IFP has condemned officials of eThekwini Municipality for betraying the residents of iLovu Transit Camp at the meeting of 4 February 2020.

The IFP said this after the visit by Joshua Mazibuko, IFP Member of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and Edward Mngadi, IFP Councillor in eThekwini Municipality, to iLovu Transit Camp to give a report to the community as they had promised during the meeting of 29 January 2020 to return with a report after two weeks.

Articulating the IFP’s indignation, Mazibuko said that, “after delivering our report, residents informed us that they still needed our involvement because eThekwini Municipality Officials, led by Head of Housing Mr. Lawrence Pato, had betrayed them at the meeting of 04 February 2020. First, they gave communities no tangible report and timeframes regarding their housing problems. They were told that the land on which their houses were to be built was taken over by other people. Consequently, it was not clear as to when and where they would have houses built. The officials also promised that they would send people on Thursday, 06 February, who would come to inspect the conditions of their houses with an intention to begin the process of renovations while residents are still waiting for their houses. However, up until today, Thursday, 13 February 2020, no official has come to do such an inspection.

“The manner that the Municipality is treating poor communities demonstrates clearly that indeed “power tends to corrupt and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.” This is an act of betrayal.

We will however not rest until the residents of iLovu Transit Camp have seen justice being done.
