IFPWB To Take the Violence Against Women and Children Campaign to Nongoma

May 15, 2018 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party Women’s Brigade will take the Violence Against Women Campaign to Nkunzana, Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal where it will be visiting the Mthembu family and engage with community members to raise awareness about violence against women and children.

Promise Mthembu died in hospital‚ where she was being treated for burn wounds after a tyre was placed around her neck and she was doused with petrol and set alight by father of her three children. We urge women to report and act against all kinds of abuse sooner, as staying in an abusive relationship increase chances to be seriously harmed or murdered by their abusers.

The IFPWB says the rights of women and children are fundamental rights entrenched in and protected by the constitution. We must not wait for 16 Days of Activism Campaign to create a greater awareness of violence being perpetuated against women and children. The killing of our women in such a gruesome manner in the hands of those they trust must come to an end.

The IFPWB says while our justice system must be empowered to mete out harsh punishment, all social structures must be mobilised and provided with resources to work within communities and with families in order to prevent violence from occurring.

We are unapologetic in calling for maximum jail sentences for those convicted for the cold and barbaric gruesome killings of women. The law fraternity must have no a single jot of mercy when sentencing and dealing with these monsters. There has to be the necessary political will to treat this scourge as a priority.
