IFPYB Youth Rally – Breaking Barriers – Building The Future

Jun 14, 2018 | Press Releases

On Saturday, 16 June 2018, the IFP Youth Brigade (IFPYB) will mark Youth Day in honouring the Youth of ’76 and all others who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom and democracy. We will celebrate the Youth of ’76 by holding a Youth Day Rally at Curries Stadium in Durban.

IFP President, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP will deliver the key note address.

President Buthelezi will be joined by IFPYB National Chairperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa MP.

This year’s theme, “Breaking Barriers- Building The Future” will address the challenges millions of South African youth face and what is required of our youth today in building a brighter future for tomorrow.

On breaking barriers – Demanding of government to offer genuine support for youth actions which will be crucial to furthering youth engagement in the political, civil and any other empowerment space. We are securing a future for the youth of our country. Youth can be empowered with education, training, by building self-esteem, by asking questions, by being given a space to get involved in issues that are important to us and our communities, and by making sure that whatever decisions the youth are involved in are important and that our ideas are taken seriously.

On building the future – We are calling for a sustainable, collective and long term action by government in fostering an environment that offers genuine support for youth action – it is crucial to furthering youth engagement. Young people will no longer be forced to take the back seat. In order to get youth involved in the decision-making process it is important to have a bottom up approach, where in youth identify issues that are important to us and have opportunities to actively participate in addressing them. This is a critical step to building ownership.

It is necessary to start from where we are as the youth, and build on our abilities. We must progressively be building skills and competence which will allow us (youth) to actively engage with the public about issues that matter to us. When given the tools and the time to develop our own abilities, we can create social change. We are building a future based on our strengths, values and innovative ideas as we bring the voices of young people to the table. It is only through giving youth meaningful opportunities to “do” and actively participate that we can help to foster youth capacity and motivation to lead and effect change.
