The Ingwe Municipality is struggling to elect a Mayor after IFP councillors refused to accept someone who is under investigation on a social grant matter.
“The IFP caucus in the Municipality was taken by surprise when we arrived for the Council last Tuesday and were told that Cllr Nono Dlamini is going to be elected as the mayor. We could not accept a person who is under investigation to be a municipal Mayor. We were against Nomagugu Luzulane who was using municipal funds inappropriately and she removed from her position. Now they secretly elected their preferred candidate and thought that when they presented it to us we will agree with it. As the IFP we are very concerned about the corruption that is happening within our municipality and the secret election of a mayor is one such example,” said IFP Cllr Sfiso Bhengu.
We also took our disapproval and concerns to the Chief Whip’s office but got no positive response from the Chief Whip who underestimates the IFP and says he won’t talk to us or provide answers to our concerns because he has nothing to do with the IFP. On Friday last week we had another council meeting where some allegations were raised about Cllr Nono Dlamini who they were proposing to be a mayor that she is receiving a social grant and that matter has been taken to COGTA and is under investigation. We also met with ANC Regional Chair and Secretary who came to agree with us that Nono Dlamini will not be inaugurated as mayor because she is under investigation. It was then agreed that we will only appoint the Speaker for now”, said Cllr S Bhengu.
