The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has received, with deep sadness and profound shock, the tragic news of a fatal bus accident that occurred earlier this morning, claiming the lives of 12 supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
This devastating incident has cast a dark cloud over our nation, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and communities mourning the untimely passing of their loved ones. We also extend our sympathies to the leadership and broader membership of the EFF, who are undoubtedly grieving the loss of comrades who were committed to advancing their political cause.
At a time when South Africans from all walks of life are called to participate in the democratic life of our country, it is especially painful when such a journey of civic engagement ends in tragedy. The individuals who lost their lives today were exercising a fundamental right enshrined in our Constitution—the right to political participation. Their deaths are a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, and of the need for all of us—regardless of political affiliation—to stand together in moments of shared loss.
The IFP calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this accident, and we urge the relevant authorities to provide support to the injured and bereaved. We also appeal to government and civil society to ensure that those affected receive the counselling, resources, and compassion they need at this difficult time.
We are united in grief with the EFF and all South Africans who are mourning today. As political parties, we may differ in ideology, but in humanity we are one. Let this moment strengthen our collective resolve to cherish life, promote road safety, and work together for the well-being of all our people.
May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may their families find comfort in the support of a caring nation.
