Residents of Lebaleng in the North West are subjected to raw sewage that puts their health and lives at risk.
“For the predominantly poor area of Lebaleng in the North West, floods of sewage have been flowing in the streets for more than two years. The contractor appointed by the district municipality, Bakgeni Civils failed to deliver on the mandate given to them yet they were paid R1,479 million by the municipality to do the job” said IFP Human Settlement spokesperson Mr Petros Sithole, MP.
The district municipality still defends the contractor, saying they have completed their work and did a fine job.
“The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) released a report that warns that people such as those in Lebaleng, who are exposed to open sewer spillages, face great health risk from inhaling the polluted air. Residents even suffer from respiratory diseases as a result of the lack of sanitation”.
“Whenever residents flush their toilets, they have to have soil ready to cover their waste which is washed out of the pipes into the yards. The municipality seems to have abandoned this community and they get away with it because no one holds them accountable. The residents are left to suffer while the consequences of corrupt practises are allowed to stand, which is unacceptable” said Sithole.
