The IFP has challenged KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu to lead by example and not accept a salary increase for at least a year.
“The Premier raised the issue of salary increases for officials during the Cosatu provincial congress held in Durban recently, when he said government officials, including President Jacob Zuma should not take salary increases for at least a year. We commend the Premier for making this statement but we would like to see him practice what he preaches. We challenge him to raise this matter further as he sits in the top structures of the ANC. He must further encourage his Cabinet MECs and ANC MPLs in KwaZulu-Natal not to accept salary increases because by doing so he will prove that he is serious about reducing debt and increasing help to the poor,” said IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.
“If Mchunu is a true leader he should instil confidence amongst his colleagues and convince them that this is the right thing to do. He must show leadership and publically state that he will not accept an increase. In this regard I am reminded of the words of Dhirubhai Ambani, an Indian business tycoon who said, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it”. Mchunu must prove that he can achieve his dream by obtaining the support of his colleagues in the ANC” continued Mr Gwala.
“Leaders MUST lead by example – demonstrating their popular influence, dealing harshly with corruption, encouraging ideas that create jobs, enlarging their vision to encompass the whole province and growing more positive role models,” concluded Mr Gwala.
The IFP will follow this matter in the KZN Legislature to see if the Premier has been successful in convincing his colleagues to go along with his thinking and not to accept the salary increases.
