The IFP expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the taxi-drivers who tragically lost their lives over the weekend.

The ambush by gunmen along the R74 road between Colenso and Weenen on Saturday night must be swiftly investigated by the authorities.

The SAPS shouldn’t be playing time gimmicks and promising people that action will be taken within 72 hours.

The Minister of Police and the Police Commissioner are well aware that taxi violence has been rooted in our society and they have sat on their hands all this time.

The IFP condemns this murderous act by thugs who are hijacking our roads. This tragedy has proven that current Police intelligence is unable to manage with taxi-violence in our country.

It cannot be business as usual with the SAPS when eleven people died as a taxi was sprayed with bullets. There are many questions which must be answered.

I will table questions in Parliament to the Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, to ascertain exactly how intelligence failed to monitor violence, what his department will be doing to address cases such as these and what is the planned way forward to deal with a looming crises.
