Matric ‘Pens Down’ Parties Must Not Be Allowed

Dec 1, 2023 | Press Releases

The IFP, as the Official Opposition in KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, says Matric ‘pens down’ celebrations must not be allowed.

During the KZN Legislature Sitting on Thursday, IFP Chief Whip in the KZN Legislature, Mrs Thembeni KaMamadlopha-Mthethwa MPL, raised a Motion calling for the ban of Matric ‘pens down’ celebrations in the province.

We reiterate our call that the KZN MEC for Education, Mbali Frazer, must take a stand and ban all Matric ‘pens down’ celebrations.

Allowing such parties to take place is nothing more than a recipe for disaster, as they are often destructive in nature, with unprotected sex and the use of illegal substances being a regular fixture of the parties. Further, in the past, Matric final exam celebrations have claimed the lives of many young people through car accidents, and violence meted out against one another.

Although the completion of exams is to be celebrated, we urge all learners to put safety first, as they have their entire lives ahead of them.

We also call upon parents to monitor their children, as some attend these so-called ‘pens down’ celebrations without their permission.
