The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal demands that the MEC of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo must urgently implement measures to limit medical negligence in provincial hospitals, following reports that Stanger Hospital is being called a butchery, where patients are dying due to negligence.
“MEC Dr Dhlomo must act now to stop this inhumane situation at Stanger Hospital. Admission to hospital is traumatic enough in many instances. People go to hospitals to cure medical problems. Sadly, some of them receive maltreatment by the very people who are medically trained to assist them. Medical malpractice continues to be an area of grave concern and is costing the department millions of Rands. We also need a robust coroner’s inquest process that will investigate deaths resulting from medical malpractice,” said IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Ncamisile Nkwanyana, MPL.
“The single overriding question is this: do we have a workable system in place in this country that allows a patient to easily report medical negligence? We believe that there should be a clear, easily accessible method of reporting medical malpractice to the appropriate institution. The public needs to be made aware of the appropriate institutions and procedure of reporting. This information must be clearly advertised in every public medical facility. The department must also blacklist doctors and nurses who have been found guilty of medical negligence and their names must be made public,” concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.
