President Cyril Ramaphosa’s deafening silence on the future of Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene is aiding and abetting market uncertainty and continues to see a fluctuation in the value of the Rand.
As Minister Nene intends to leave for the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bali, Indonesia today, his future as Finance Minister hangs in the balance and a cloud of uncertainty hovers above his head.
We are two weeks away from the medium term budget address, and we are not sure if the Finance Minister will remain in his position for much longer.
We await the urgent announcement by President Ramaphosa, postponing this may see rating agencies downgrade our credit status, drive up costs of loans, and ultimately affecting all South African’s pockets.
It has become worrisome that on key matters of the economy, the President has been founding wanting, lacking in providing leadership and this kind of laissez-faire approach to urgent matters is not befitting to the Office which he occupies.
Therefore, it would serve the President well to step up and provide leadership and direction at this very critical moment and to take the nation into his confidence and address the nation on the fate of Minister Nene.
