IFP: New MEC must address increasing social ills

Jun 10, 2019 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party acknowledges the appointment of Hon Nonhlanhla Khoza as the new MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal.

We know that Hon Khoza is new to her position and she faces many challenges in communities across the province. The IFP will support the MEC and her Department when the best interests of the community are placed before political expediency. The IFP has experience in governance in KZN and, as the official opposition in the Legislature we will monitor the work of the Department and offer advice. The IFP will not oppose for the sake of opposing but will be a constructive opposition.

Social ills arising out of poverty and unemployment pose a severe threat to the social fabric of the province. Substance abuse, abandoned babies, abuse of the elderly and social tensions are uninvited and unwanted guests in KwaZulu-Natal. The IFP believes that these and other social evils can only be addressed through effective education and public awareness.

The MEC will be advised to engage with communities in an apolitical manner and win the trust of people by prioritising their concerns and demonstrating a will to improve the lives of our people. Anything less than this will see her failing the people of KwaZulu-Natal as did some of her colleagues before her.

The IFP wishes Hon Khoza well and assures her of our co-operation in the interest of the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
