Provincial Task Team Must Be Appointed To Probe Missing Guns At Umkhomazi Police Station

May 27, 2017 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu-Natal calls on the KZN MEC of Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda to urgently appoint a Provincial Task Team that will conduct a thorough investigation into the nine guns that are missing at uMkhomazi Police Station, South of Durban.

“There must be a thorough investigation because according to the reports it is alleged that this is an inside job as there was no break in. It is further reported that computers were stolen in January this year and tyres were stolen in November last year but no action was taken. We are very concerned about these missing guns because they might be used to kill innocent people and to commit other criminal activities. This situation is like rubbing salt in the wound as we have a problem of a high rate of illegal guns being used to kill, rob people and businesses in our communities,” said IFP KZN Provincial Spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Blessed Gwala MPL.

“We demand that the MEC must ensure that the station commander responsible for keys where guns are kept is held accountable. The station commander must account for where the guns are. It must be ascertained whether there are other staff members who have access to the room or safe where the guns are stored and if there are spare keys. This issue deserves urgent attention and the culprits must be brought to book because it is obvious that someone is in cahoots with criminals,” continued Mr Gwala.

“The more guns that are in a single place, particularly handguns, the more of a target that place will become. We are of the view that stolen guns are being modified and they represented the bulk of illegal firearms that are in the hands of criminals,” concluded Mr Gwala.

The IFP demands a full audit of firearms allocated to all police stations across KwaZulu-Natal, as well as those for firearms that are kept as exhibits in criminal cases.
