Where Is The Report On The Irregularities At KZN Treasury?

Aug 30, 2016 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party has challenged the newly appointed Premier, Willies Mchunu to give an update on what was the outcome of the investigation conducted by the SIU into irregularities at the KZN Treasury.

“In July 2015 President Jacob Zuma called for the SIU to conduct an investigation into the affairs of KZN Treasury. The investigation was about the spending of tax payers’ money on projects like the International North Sea Jazz Festival, Commemoration of Prisoners of War-St Helena event and KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board. Millions of rand were paid to the organisers but some of the projects never took place and money was not recovered,” IFP Leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.

“We have raised this matter with the former Premier,Senzo Mchunu but he ignored our questions. He didn’t answered anything which left us to believe that he was hiding corrupt activities at the Treasury. Now it is the duty of the current Premier to pursue such important matters which were left unattended by the former premier. The current Premier must familiarize himself about these issues and ensure that the investigation progresses if he is against corruption. The IFP is concerned about the silence on such serious matters where millions of rands of tax payers’ money is unaccounted for but the provincial government remains silent ,” continued Mr Gwala.

“As the IFP we will continue to be a sharp thorn in the side of the KZN Provincial Government in any matters of corruption and will demand answers so that our people must know what is happening there. We cannot just sit and relax while public funds were wasted for nothing. That money would have benefited many poor people instead of donating it to corrupt event organizers both locally and abroad,” concluded Mr Gwala.

The IFP will further pursue this matter along with other outstanding issues which were left unattended by Premier Senzo Mchunu in order to make sure that anyone found to be guilty is held accountable.
