The Inkatha Freedom Party Women’s Brigade took note of the Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision on Thursday to convert Oscar Pistorius’s sentence, for the tragic killing of the late Ms Reeva Steenkamp, to murder. “We welcome the decision of the Supreme Court of Appeal, as we long held that the punishment did not fit the crime. A strong message should be sent that the murder and abuse of our women will no longer be tolerated. We are happy that the Court sent that message yesterday. Finally there will be justice for Reeva,” said Mrs Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, Chairperson of the IFP Women’s Brigade. The Chairperson of the Women’s Brigade further called on all South Africans to support the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children campaign. “The levels of violence against women and children have reached unprecedented levels, which resembles a nation at war with itself. We can only effectively tackle this crisis if all political parties, communities stand together, united in our resolve to end this crisis. We have not had much success in the fight against violence against women and children because we have not seen a national plan, involving all stakeholders. This must change. The IFP pledges it support once more to end gender-based violence,” concluded Mrs KaMadlopha-Mthethwa MPL.
