The Inkatha Freedom Party welcomes Eskom’s decision to suspend its CEO Mr Tshediso Matona and another three executive members of the parastatal.
In a media briefing held at Megawatt Park on Thursday, the power utility’s chairperson Mr Zola Tsotsi announced that this was to allow the Board of enquiry to look at the poor performance of generation plant delays in bringing the new generation plant on-stream, high costs of primary energy and cash flow challenges.
The IFP’s Chief Whip in Parliament and spokesperson on Public Enterprises, Mr Narend Singh, MP said, “There is no smoke without fire. For it to be said that this is a routine enquiry is possibly underplaying the rot within Eskom which for a year and a half has been under serious challenge in terms of its power output”.
“This comes at a time that South Africans are subjected to frequent blackouts, with the government saying that its economic growth forecast for 2015 could have to 1 percent because of power constraints. It is imperative that this power utility begins to be managed and function correctly,” concluded Singh, MP.
