The IFP says the poor are like lambs ready for slaughter, in shack fires that have killed hundreds. The party said this in a statement issued today in reaction to the news of the fire that killed a woman and four children at eManyaleni Informal Settlements in Chatsworth today. The party’s KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements Spokesperson, Joshua Mazibuko said: “The IFP was more than shocked and saddened by reports of yet another fire outbreak which claimed the lives of a woman and four children at Emanyaleni Informal Settlements in Chatsworth today.
“It is really an indictment on the government that twenty years into a democratic order, the poorest and the destitute still live each day like lambs ready for slaughter in the fires that have become a common feature of informal settlements; this as government dismally fails to rescue them from the inhuman conditions which make them vulnerable to shack fires. We call on government to pressurize eThekwini Municipality to expend their energies in projects to improve informal settlements instead of paralysis of internal party-political power struggles.”
“Our hearts go out to all the bereaved and all those who lost their possessions in that blaze.”
