Media adverts placed by KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu calling for xenophobic attacks to stop is nothing more than a waste of tax payer’s money.
“The attacks on foreign citizens have reached alarming proportions and this inhumane situation calls for decisive leadership not adverts in newspapers.
“Premier Mchunu should know that people who are caught up in this spiral of violent attacks will not be reading the newspapers. These people have no homes, no food and are left with just the clothes on their backs. They face a bleak and uncertain future filled with fear. As the first citizen of the province, Mchunu should be out there amongst the affected people calling for calm and urging an end to the violence. He instead chooses to remain in his office while using taxpayers’ money to place adverts that refer to international treaties. Those international treaties amount to nothing more than ink on paper if they are not implemented on the ground by leaders who have the ability to inspire and motivate people, to give life to the contents of the treaties and the spirit of Ubuntu”, said IFP National Chairman, Mr Blessed Gwala MPL.
“Premier Mchunu must follow the example set by the President of the IFP Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and go out to the various sports grounds and community halls where people are sheltered and engage with them. Prince Buthelezi has made a call for leaders in government and those out of government to hold public rallies, which he has been doing over the past few weeks, calling for an end to the attacks on foreign citizens. In addition to food and other relief, Prince Buthelezi also carried a message of hope and an apology to all those affected.
It is for this sort of responsible, visionary and statesman-like leadership that Prince Buthelezi was presented an award from the UN-aligned Presidential Outreach Organisation. Leaders from all walks of life should now be out in their various communities to stem the tide of violence before it engulfs our nation”, concluded Mr Gwala.
