Vigilance Needs To Be Hightened To Guard Against Abuse Of State Resources

Jun 3, 2016 | Press Releases

The Inkatha Freedom Party believes that the increase in the number of independent candidates in certain areas will heighten vigilance on the abuse of state resources as the local government elections approaches.

“Over the years the IFP has been raising its concern about the abuse of state resources and the use of state apparatus for party-political gain by the ruling party. Our concerns, which we backed up with tangible evidence, fell on deaf ears. As a result the electorate was robbed of rightful representation and democracy was weakened. It is unacceptable that tax payer’s money is used to benefit one political party to remain in power. When this sort of abuse of state resources occurs, the principle of “free and fair” elections flies out the window and the outcome of the polls is called into question,” said IFP National Chairperson, Mr Blessed Gwala.

“We believe that the increase in the number of independent candidates in many areas will serve to heighten vigilance on the abuse of state resources. Many of the independent candidates will have knowledge of how state resources were abused in the past and what to look out for in the days ahead. Together with opposition parties these independent candidates will assist to strengthen democracy and ensure that the electorate is not led astray. It is often said that eternal vigilance is the price we must pay for freedom. We need to be vigilant to protect and enhance the democracy that we are blessed with. We call on all South Africans to be vigilant and ensure that their valued vote is not wasted”, continued Mr Gwala
